In 1984, Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy was released. In this movie there was this line that I remember for some reason. Eddie asked another character in the movie if the convertible Mercedes was really her car and she responds, “No, In Beverly Hills we take whichever car is closer”. It was a wise crack at the time but it seems as if the futurists interested in vehicles and future cities have that same concept in mind.
The futurists in The Futurist Magazine Article: Sustainable Urban Mobility in 2020 believes that right now we drive too much car. These cars have tons of horsepower and long range fuel tanks for a small 40 mile round trip. It seems as if they believe that cities can control congestion and road maintenance by issue cars per square mile. That way no one has to buy a car and they can essentially take which ever car is closer to them as they will all be of the same type and size.
These cars will be autonomous and know the best routes and styles of driving that will produce the least amount of pollution and the best time to a destination. In my mind I envision like calling a robotic cab anytime you need to be somewhere. The authors also go on the too say that the cities will need to change to accommodate this type of change. I agree that there is too much space allotted for vehicles that we do not have to have. This change however major it appears now is one that I definitely see coming because it is practical and economical to say the least.
